David Paletz is the most memorable professor of my undergraduate career (1981-85), and this is not because of his accent and the emblematic turtlenecks. His courses were packed with well-curated, provocative material that enabled students to form a more complex and accurate view of our social and political milieu, making us more functional adults. His engaging, witty classroom style and rigorous expectations for critical thinking and scholarship challenged and motivated me to excel at a critical time in my life. I credit Professor Paletz’s blunt observations in conference about my inability to state a coherent term-paper thesis as the reason I never turned up unprepared again. I have profound respect, gratitude and appreciation for his life and work as a teacher and expert in his field.”
