I greatly admire Dr. Paletz, and appreciate the profound impact he made on all aspects of my education, as well as the way in which I view many aspects of life, include films and other art forms. The first course I took with Dr. Paletz was his study of the relationship between mass media and political authority. I vividly recall those evenings spent in the Gross Chem building watching and then discussing films. To this day, I force my wife to endure watching The Manchurian Candidate (the first one, not the 2004 remake) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, whenever they are shown on television, and then listening to my analysis of the role played by the press in both films. She is fortunate that commercial television rarely shows The Battleship Potemkin, Triumph of the Will, or Blood of the Beasts.
