David was the best, most demanding and thought-provoking of any professor I had at Duke. He was also the mentor who inspired me to become a political scientist myself. David’s contribution to my career path was incalculable, and I am just one among generations of Duke students whose lives were profoundly influenced by his intelligence, high standards, wit, and care.
